While headlines are swirling about our favorite royals enjoying sushi with A-listers, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz. It is important to make sure enough of the spotlight is shown brightly on all of the upbuildings; as well as the positive actions that the Sussexes are making. This week we note the Prince Harry and Meghan Mental Health Awareness Month Visit to a local youth group.
This is an important visit, because mental health disorders among teens are rapidly increasing. For example, UNICEF DATA shows that, “In 2019, it is estimated that one in seven adolescents experience mental disorders. This amounts to an estimated 166 million adolescents.” At the time, that worked out to 89 million boys; as well as 77 million girls.
It is now 2023. And the numbers are not improving. The only way to understand this issue is to talk to young people, learn how they feel and see how you can help.
Prince Harry and Meghan Mental Health Awareness Month Visit Local Youth Group
Prince Harry and his wife, Duchess Meghan, are doing just that. They busted the AHA! Youth Group in Santa Barbara, California. The aim of the visit is to learn firsthand about this generation’s experiences with social media and social pressure; and to work towards finding solutions together.
The youth group consists of 14-18 year olds. Both Harry and Meghan were listening intently and note-taking the thoughts of these wonderful young individuals. After the event, the ARCHEWELL website posted the following:
“During this hour long session, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke with teens ages 14-18 about the opportunities social media can provide for connection and community. [As well as] the way in which it also raises issues of insecurity; peer pressure, and potential for self harm, among other risks. These important perspectives and experiences help us understand how mental wellness interacts with the world. And what it means to promote digital wellness in a digital age.
The ARCHEWELL Foundation (AWF) has a history of engaging on these critical issues. [Also] working in partnership with youth groups, experts, and families, to develop programs that support and inspire change.
AWF holds a core belief that mental health is of the utmost importance; and underpins all of our work. We are regularly meeting with youth young people, parents and professionals. To understand the challenges they may be facing while working together to drive towards long term solutions on-and offline.”
nice! It’s refreshing to see Meghan and Harry continuing to do what they do best… inspire, support and give aid to others. We are sure they will soon be able to develop some amazing, helpful programs for youth across the country and world.
