Top Fashion Stories of the Week: June 23

This week was quite a busy — and monumental — one for the fashion industry. First and foremost, Pharrell made his much-anticipated debut at the helm of LouisVuitton, putting forth a massive Spring/Summer 2024 runway show to open Paris Fashion Week Men’s. Throughout the tightly-packed week, designers including Wales Bonner, Louis Gabriel Nouchi, Rick Owens and many more also pulled back the curtain on next season’s wares, sparking myriad discussions on where style (and the industry) is headed next. Off the runway, Future was tapped to be the first-ever creative director for Lanvin Lab, and Nana Aganovic and Brooke Taylor…

Best-Dressed at the NBA Draft

The fact that the NBA draft occurred smack in the middle of the Paris men’s wear shows was something of a cosmically appropriate coincidence. After all, the draft has increasingly become one of our most watched runways, the heart of the convergence between fashion and sport that has spawned the tunnel walk and social media accounts that chronicle players’ wardrobes — and leads to front row seats at shows like Louis Vuitton, recently attended by LeBron James, and Rick Owens, where Kyle Kuzma showed up. And it is only getting more important. ESPN has added a one-hour “NBA Draft Red…

Getting ready for the Mission Impossible premiere with Hayley Atwell

“I have a much deeper understanding of the power of dressing now,” says actress Hayley Atwell. Her most recent public appearance – at the London premiere of the new Mission Impossible movie in Leicester Square last night – confirms this; she walked the red carpet in an artistic, statement-making gown that made an impact for all the right reasons. “There’s a simple elegance to this dress, yet is inherently sculptured and unusual – you can see similarities in a vase or sculpture,” she tells us. Her black Ashi Studio gown featured a heart-shaped balloon skirt, contrasted with a sleek body,…

How did the Filles du Roy actually dress?

This video was produced by Lydia Robb as part of the CBC Creator Network. Learn more about the Creator Network here. The Filles du Roy, or King’s Daughters, were the hundreds of young women sent by the King of France to a remote, fur-trading colony called Canada. Between 1663 and 1673, nearly 1,000 of them arrived to help boost the population by encouraging male immigrants to settle, marry and raise families. But, contrary to how they’ve long been depicted in the history of books and works of art, they did not arrive dressed in the trappings of wealth. Using records…

Paris Fashion Week: fashion, star power and a martial aura fuse at Givenchy’s collection

PARIS – History, fashion, and star power came together at Givenchy’s latest menswear show at Les Invalides in Paris. Steeped in the martial aura of the former military hospital with its cast iron cannons, the show was the first of its kind across the monument’s sprawling balcony. Film star and musician Jared Leto was among the luminaries who applauded the spectacle. Here are some highlights of Thursday’s spring-summer 2024 menswear collections, including an interview with designer Matthew M. Williams: GIVENCHY GETS CONFIDENT In recent seasons, the creative heat at Givenchy under Williams had seemed somewhat tepid. However, this latest collection,…

Shein, H&M and Other Fashion Resale Programs Don’t Make Big Money

Resale has quickly emerged as the initiative of choice for fashion brands looking to lower theirs carbon, plastic and water footprints—or at least in some instances to convince green-conscious shoppers that they’re trying. But here’s the rub: So far even savvy brands such as Patagonia or Shein haven’t figured out how to make secondhand selling accounts for more than a tiny fraction of their profits. More than 100 apparel retailers have started in-house resale platforms within the past two years, with 88 new programs last year alone, according to data from ThredUp Inc., which both operates an online thrift store…
