Tiffany, Dior: Understanding the New Model for Luxury Flagships

NEW YORK — For luxury brands with global ambitions, a founding flagship is as important to the mission as Disney World is to Disney. Nowhere is that more true than for Tiffany, which is set to reopen its Fifth Avenue flagship Friday after a multi-year renovation. In addition to being the most visible and famous manifestation of the brand (enshrined in the popular imagination by the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”), the store is a cash cow, generating around 10 percent of sales prior to its closure. Few, if any, luxury brands of Tiffany’s size rely so heavily on a single location. For LVMH, which paid $15.8 billion (luxury’s biggest ever deal) to acquire Tiffany in January 2021, getting the renovation right is therefore critical to its “shock and awe” campaign to transform a beloved, if...

Telfar Introduces New Live Pricing Model

The New York-based brand, known for its popular shopping bag totes — nicknamed the “Bushwick Birkin” — is introducing a new pricing strategy for its latest collection dropping on March 27. Rather than set prices, Telfar will let consumer demand determine cost: after the collection drops, items’ prices will start rising from wholesale prices up to retail prices (the price of the clothes would be sold in a store). Once an item sells out, it will remain at the price it lands on for future collections. As part of the Telfar Live Price format, new items will drop weekly through April 24. “Many brands use price as a barrier to entry. I never wanted that for my brand,” designer Telfar Clemens told Fast Companywhich first reported the news. It’s a move in line with Telfar’s pattern...

How to Handle Ecommerce Returns: Best Practices for Apparel

Allowing anyone with an internet connection to establish their own e-commerce store, Shopify is used by millions of retailers to sell their products online. The platform makes setting up and managing a store simple, yet its standard return management process leaves plenty to be desired. You receive a return request and log in to see what the problem is. You compare the return reasons against your policy and decide whether to grant the request. You fill in the details, purchase a shipping label and send it to the customer. Then you move on to the next one and, before you know it, that time you put aside to update your product pages or create marketing content has disappeared. Or, you could let automation do the heavy lifting… Thankfully, Shopify’s thriving user base has attracted a marketplace...

How did the Filles du Roy actually dress?

This video was produced by Lydia Robb as part of the CBC Creator Network. Learn more about the Creator Network here. The Filles du Roy, or King’s Daughters, were the hundreds of young women sent by the King of France to a remote, fur-trading colony called Canada. Between 1663 and 1673, nearly 1,000 of them arrived to help boost the population by encouraging male immigrants to settle, marry and raise families. But, contrary to how they’ve long been depicted in the history of books and works of art, they did not arrive dressed in the trappings of wealth. Using records from more than three centuries ago, genre art and the history of fashion, artist and amateur historian Lydia Robb paints a picture of how these poor, abandoned women might have really dressed. The Creator Network, which...
