Jane Birkin’s enduring style legacy

Jane Birkin, who died Sunday aged 76, will be remembered for many things: Her collaboration with long-time partner Serge Gainsbourg, her vocals on his hit “Je T’aime… Moi Non Plus” and her acting on both stage and screen, among much else. It is in fashion, however, that her legacy may endure the longest. The London-born muse who became a star in France, her adopted homeland, has long been considered a style icon. A Group of Artists Is Suing Fast-Fashion Giant Shein, Claiming It Used a ‘Secretive Algorithm’ to Identify and Steal Their Work

The Chinese online retailer Shein has allegedly used a “secretive algorithm” to identify trending art and steal the designs from the artists who made them to reproduce on its fast-fashion clothing. The revelation was made in a lawsuit filed by artists Krista Perry, Larissa Martinez, and Jay Baron filed in a US District Court in Los Angeles. The artists allege the company violated federal laws for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, known as RICO. “Shein is actually a greater societal threat than TikTok because it contributes mightily to serious problems beyond data security and privacy,” the lawsuit reads. “The brand has made billions by creating a secretive algorithm that astonishingly determines nascent fashion trends… coupling it with a corporate structure, including production and fulfillment schemes that are perfectly executed to grease the wheels of the algorithm,...

New York Fashion Week: Peguis First Nation designer attending event

When New York Fashion Week kicks off in September, a woman from Peguis First Nation will be there showing off her work and culture. Alyssia Sutherland, the owner of Ally’s Ribbons, was one of the few Indigenous artists was invited to the showcase event, which runs from Sept. 7 to 13. Sutherland designs ribbon skirts and will be taking 15 of them for the show.
