Paris Fashion Week: fashion, star power and a martial aura fuse at Givenchy’s collection

PARIS – History, fashion, and star power came together at Givenchy’s latest menswear show at Les Invalides in Paris. Steeped in the martial aura of the former military hospital with its cast iron cannons, the show was the first of its kind across the monument’s sprawling balcony. Film star and musician Jared Leto was among the luminaries who applauded the spectacle. Here are some highlights of Thursday’s spring-summer 2024 menswear collections, including an interview with designer Matthew M. Williams: GIVENCHY GETS CONFIDENT In recent seasons, the creative heat at Givenchy under Williams had seemed somewhat tepid. However, this latest collection, presented against the backdrop of Les Invalides’ pale stone arches, displayed a new-found creative confidence from him. The designer seems to be settling in to successfully steer the age-old LVMH-owned house into solid sartorial ground. The...

Amal Clooney wears a metallic gold jumpsuit to speak at a conference

What’s the secret to Amal Clooney’s style? Relying on timeless classics, again and again. Whether she’s wearing a good pair of denim jeans or dressing up in sequins, the human rights lawyer always looks polished and sophisticated; she knows what suits her and steers clear from passing trends. Her latest look is a prime example of her approach to dressing. Clooney took to the stage during the global ‘We Choose Earth Tour’ conference in Madrid, wearing a stylish yellow-gold jumpsuit, featuring an asymmetric pleated body. Carlos Alvarez//Getty Images Europa Press Entertainment//Getty Images While the one-shouldered style could easily be worn for an evening soirée, Clooney’s look felt workwear appropriate thanks to the slightly cropped, cigarette-style trousers and well-tailored fit. She styled her jumpsuit with matching pointed court heels, Cartier jewelery and a cream clutch bag. When...

Shein, H&M and Other Fashion Resale Programs Don’t Make Big Money

Resale has quickly emerged as the initiative of choice for fashion brands looking to lower theirs carbon, plastic and water footprints—or at least in some instances to convince green-conscious shoppers that they’re trying. But here’s the rub: So far even savvy brands such as Patagonia or Shein haven’t figured out how to make secondhand selling accounts for more than a tiny fraction of their profits. More than 100 apparel retailers have started in-house resale platforms within the past two years, with 88 new programs last year alone, according to data from ThredUp Inc., which both operates an online thrift store business and has helped many brands set up their own resale programs. This includes some of the biggest brands, including H&M and fast-fashion champ Shein. In 2022 resale of apparel, footwear and handbags in the US...

Milan Fashion Week: Italian Men’s Wear Does a Power Edit

Concision — that was the word to come to mind after eight surprising days in this men’s wear capital, and in Florence. Did some unseen force take a blue pencil to all the slack narratives, rehashed inspirations, derivative references that prevail in recent seasons? Suddenly everything seemed crisp and focused, like early Hemingway after he’d learned how to do Gertrude Stein. Designers laboring for decades on narratives as schticky as the plot of an airport novel (we see you, Dolce & Gabbana) discovered urgency and a fresh approach in a tight edit. It must be freeing not to rewrite the same paragraph every season, even if the exigencies of an increasingly industrialized luxury goods market demand that designers repeat themselves. What to do? You could follow the lead of Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, showing his first...

Later-day Saint clothes designer debuts her Dillard’s collection

Jennifer Sumko fell asleep daydreaming about designs for dresses, blouses and pants. But the Latter-day Saint mom of four isn’t just dreaming anymore. Her spring and summer clothing collection is currently available at Dillard’s 250-plus stores across the United States. The 35-piece collection includes dresses, shoes, swimsuits and more. Sumko said she used bright, garden-inspired patterns and colors to invoke feelings of happiness and whimsy. She found additional inspiration in her love for textiles and wallpapers. The collection is also unique because Sumko designed it for compatibility with temple garments — special undergarments worn by adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who have made promises to God in temples. Temple garments are a physical reminder of these sacred promises, known as covenants, and of the blessings available when those promises are...

Pharrell fuses entertainment and fashion for confident Louis Vuitton menswear debut

By THOMAS ADAMSONAP Fashion Writer PARIS (AP) — Unveiling a new chapter in its illustrious history, Louis Vuitton made an indelible mark on Paris Fashion Week’s men’s shows as they premiered the debut collection by musician-turned-designer Pharrell Williams. Appointed in February to fill the immense shoes left by the death of Virgil Abloh, Williams unveiled his design prowess to the fashion world with a show that exuded confidence. The breathtaking venue for this sartorial spectacle was Paris’ iconic Pont Neuf. The historic bridge, typically responding with time-worn stone, was transformed into a golden runway — a dramatic stage set against the backdrop of the shimmering Seine and under the starlit Parisian sky. The Tuesday night event drew a constellation of stars in their own right. The stellar audience includes icons of music, sports and entertainment. Among...
